This was b/c the nature of education and culture in the north. Dark ages - urban life did not exist. Education - was the function of those who had to have education - those of the church literacy was needed among the clergy. The clergy susbstained education in monasteries and cathedral schools. When education started in towns, it was used to train the clergy eventually, role of learning expands. Professional schools, such as law and med school, began to develop. These schools did not alter the clerical perspective however. Charles the 8th wanted to cross and conquer naples. French - wanted to bring back the renaissance back to france. They began to have an interest in italy. 1494 - 1559 - northern europeans began to spend time in northern italy.
