HIS378H Lecture April 3/2014 • Endings: 1969 o People’s Park, Berkeley   1956, regions of University of California allocate a piece of land with student housing, etc.  and said they were going to turn it into better student housing… didn’t have enough $ at the  time, and project was put on hold until 1967 • Residents there were evicted • They then instead decided to build a field and a parking lot on the land • In 1969 some of the local residents decided they should figure out what to do with the  land o They decide to make it a public park… was approved by the attendees of the  meeting (students, city councilors, etc.) o Many people involved were also involved in free speech movement 5 years  earlier o The governor decided that it was the universities land, and that it was up to  them what they wanted to do with it o  The university took back the park, and put up a fence  o There was a huge protest (6000+ people), security forces were losing control,  there were 790 troops there trying to control the crowd  o Reagan declares a state of emergency in Berkley  Se
