It provides knowledge for the future because genetics will become a critical aspect of your life. Even if you don"t stay in science you will probably be at some point in your life where you need to make a genetic decision. We will learn about gene therapy as well. We will talk about tools geneticists use to examine genetics. Because it"s impossible to do all types of experiments on humans because you can"t tell 2 people to mate today and such, we can"t do that so we use model organisms. We use them to illustrate genetic points. When possible we"ll talk about human genetics as well.

The President of Harvard University, Lawrence Summers, was an invited speaker at a recent conference sponsored by the National Bureau of Economic Research on the issue of gender and minority differences in top-level positions of science, math, and engineering. At that meeting, he acknowledged many of the traditionally-stated reasons for such gender differences but also brought up the possibility that biology and genetics might play a role in these differences.

WHAT SHOULD the argument be if they sue?

Who would win? WHY?

What should the settlement be (not just money)?

What group should have stepped in and stopped this? And HOW?

3. ETHICAL: Were the doctors who gave this to women responsible for what happened to them and subsequent generations? WHY or WHY NOT?

4. Why did these women take an unknown substance?

5. This has happened very few times in medical history. Find one example that has happened recently and tell me about it

6. A new area of genetics called EPIGENETICS has recently given an explanation about what happened. What is epigenetics and how does it fit into the case?

7. The future of DES. Do you think this could go on for many generations in the future. EXPLAIN.

8. Did this affect the boys born by these women? Does it give us a clue as to how homosexuality might be inherited? Explain.
