JHA410H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Postcentral Gyrus, Central Sulcus, Hydrocephalus
Document Summary
Some main neuroanatomical structures include the: central sulcus which separates on either side the precentral gyrus (motor cortex or m1) and the postcentral gyrus (somatosensory cortex or s1) Radiological orientation is the opposite of neurological in that scans are as if you are looking at the person, therefore your left = the person"s right. Mri use magnetic fields and radio waves to create high-resolution images of the brain for the investigation of morphological, functional changes, or abnormalities. About 65% of our body is made up of water, therefore, we have lots of hydrogen atoms: hydrogen atoms only have one proton so they can spin to produce magnetic fields (i. e. emitting energy) In the absence of a strong magentic field the h atoms will spin (precess) randomly on their axis. However, in the presence of a strong magnetic field the atoms will spin in alignment with the magnetic field.
