JHA410H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Diffusion Mri, Sickle-Cell Disease, Cerebral Palsy
Document Summary
Lecture 6: imaging the impact of stroke in children. Caused by a clot in a blood vessel that supplies the brain. Blood flow to that part of the brain is stopped. Therefore, oxygen and other nutrients can"t get to that part of the brain, this causes damage to that part of the brain, and stops it from working properly. Neurological deficits are present in 60% of neonates and 70% of older children following stroke. Highest stroke risk in lifetime, particularly the first week of life. Leading cause of cerebral palsy in children carried to term. One of the top 15 causes of infant mortality, lots of neural deficits. 4/10 cases the cause is unknown- > idiopathic. Heart disease: either born with (congenital) or acquires later, such as rheumatic heart disease. Blood clotting disorders, serious infections, especially in the head and neck, accidents involving the head and neck region, heart or brain surgery, sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia, metabolic illness.
