HPS100H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Classical Mechanics, Tychonic System, Formal Science
Document Summary
Acceptance - it is the best available description of its object. Use of theories - it is taken as an adequate tool for practical application; does not have to be accepted. Pursuit of theories - it is considered worthy of further development; ex. R&d (not accepted bc they do not confirm novel predictions yet) Incompatible theories can be used/pursued but not accepted simultaneously. Scientific method - is a method of appraisal to determine which theory is better given available evidence. Method - a set of requirements for employment in theory assessment; intuition/gut feeling; implicit/actual expectations. Not the same as methodology - explicitly stated rules of theory assessment; correct way of doing science. Method always exists whereas methodology may not be explored yet. Not the same as research technique - set of procedures for theory construction. Ex. of methods in which to accept theories. Based on precision and accuracy; that fit the data.
