HPS100H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Neutral Monism, Monism, Materialism
Document Summary
Nowadays, we believe that the processes in the brain produce psychological phenomena. Individually, we may have different views on the subject. What we are interested in here is the view that is implicit in our theories. We believe that the processes in the brain produce psychological phenomena. Essentially, the processes in the brain are interactions between neurons. Although, we do not understand how the networks of neurons produce complex chains of reasoning, we do believe that brain processes produce everything in the mind. We cannot have thoughts if we don"t have something happening within the neurons. The mind is a product of brain sciences this is neurology. Materialism: there is only one substance matter. This replaced dualism there are 2 substances: mind and matter. Dualism states that there are purely material and spiritual entities that"s it, and there are citizens of two worlds: human beings.
