HPS100H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Agnosticism, Determinism, Theism
Document Summary
The mind is a product of brain processes. There are two substances - matter and mind. Material objects cannot exist without some underlying mental structure. Extreme: everything you see is in your mind. Everything in the world is both material and spiritual. All matter has both wave and corpuscular properties. The more precise is the position of a particle, the less precise is its momentum, and vice versa. In any material process, the same initial conditions always produce the same effects. Laws of physics doesn"t apply to mental process. While in the material world, all events are strictly deterministic, the mind is free to act spontaneously. All events has their causes and the same initial conditions always produce the same effects. In some situation, there is an infinite number of possible outcomes. All events have their causes, but the same initial conditions may produce different effects. We cannot know whether god exists or doesn"t exist.
