Catholic church demanded authority to the church; mediated through an institution: politics. Rise of liberalism and democracy; government power limited; people have individual rights. British king was not respecting rights: education and science. Enlightened ideal: individuals can reason and learn for themselves; should not follow institutions: marriage, from obedience and equality. Original wedding vows; different for men and women; women obey: post wwii worries. Worries about obedience due to war and nazis. Nazi party, led by hitler, came into power in 1933.
