Description
Fast vs Slow Electrical chemical Squid, cat axon (myelin and diameter) Electrical synapses mediated by one gene – connexion hexamers. Slowest action potentials – tiniest unmyelinated fibers. Ligand gated – ionotropic fastest Need to know 4 types of receptors iono metabo tyrosine steroid (lipid soluble) Fewer synapse means faster PnC giant neurons – fast reflex Visual cues not as fast – to SC – then replayed through interneurons. Retinal map compared with auditory map. Auditory info coming from inferior colliculus. Trigeminal – tactile info – whiskers. Approach response Saccadic eye movement – jumping, quick eye movement to target. Almost no delay in response. Fast foveation of visual stimulus. Vertical – midbrain oculomotor. Horizontal – pons abducens. Moderate stimuli, crossed tectospinal Avoidance – big large coming from behind , uncrossed tectopontine, deep layers of SC. Defensive respon
