Document Summary

If the pathogens can breach the barriers, it will induce innate immunity. Innate immunity is the only immune system in all of vertebrates and plants. Innate immunity is the first line of defense. Innate cells have a pre-determined and limited number of receptors. Innate cells can activate immediately, adaptive immunity requires priming. Priming means that innate cells are ready to go as soon as their receptors are activated. Innate immunity controls the number of pathogens, it stops the proliferation of number of pathogens. Innate immunity is not always able to cure the infection. Then the adaptive immunity kicks in after the level of pathigogens reaches the threshold number, the adaptive immunity kicks in. In absence of adaptive immunity, infections are first controlled by inate immunity but cannot be cured. Janeway came out with the idea that innate cells have pattern recognition recrptors, which react when they only see something that is not normal in the host.
