IMM250H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Indep, Statistical Inference, Descriptive Statistics
Document Summary
Soc is empirical discipline we don"t just speculate, we go and gather data and use it to back up our speculations. Need observable data to evaluate claims about the world (data has many forms ex: pics). We use quantitative data info represented by numbers (ex: how many, how much). It"s not a natural or perfect representation of the real world, we made it so it"s gotta be flawed. Stats is a tool that lets us organize and manipulate quantitative data. Descriptive statistics summarizing how the world is based on stats. Describe some aspect of the world (univariate descriptive statistics) Describe how things are related (bivariate/multivariate descriptive statistics) Inferential statistics not just describing, we"re trying to find conclusion about the population from the sample (conclusion about big from small). Draw a conclusion about the wider world from a smaller part of it a sample drawn from a larger population.
