Document Summary

Lecture 9: b cell activation and antibody production. Igm antibodies are in response to polyvalent antigens: do not need t cells to mount an immune response (b1 cells) Igm class: production of igm and then the plasma cells die, there is no memory really, the next time a t independent antigen is encountered there is no formation of memory. A second signal is required for b-cell activation: activation of b cells requires a signal 1 and signal 2 of activation. Signal 1 is facilitated by the bcr co-receptor (cr2/cd19/cd81: the signal that goes through the co-receptor is essential for the complete activation of a crucial molecule called plc-gamma. 2 cells that are interacting but are recognizing different epitopes of the same antigen: the bcr is internalizing the whole virus by recognizing the epitope --> it will process the proteins. It is able to present the antigen recognized by t cells.
