Virgil- he is in a special privileged position in hell, called limbo. Infants that die before receiving baptism and do not have grace of redemption. Limbo is not a permanent place, in second coming that will change and they can leave. Human virtues: virgil does not posses these virtues and cannot enter paradise but he has the cardinal virtues: temperance fortitude, patience, and prudence. Christian virtues: faith hope, and charity brought to people by christ. Three guides: virgil brings dante through hell, up to mountain of purgatory, where he cannot enter paradise beatrice accompanies dante. Third guide: st. bernard, mystic in christian values he is the one who is allowed the contemplation of god. He is allowed to speak directly to the virgin. He prays to the virgin for dante to be allowed the final destination illumination directly with god. The virgin gives grace, for dante to illuminated to god. Virgil is allowed to top of mount purgatory, geocentric cosmology.
