Document Summary

Western border, india on west to philippines on the east. Indic area - its like every area has its own script. Although over 2500 artifacts with writing found, no decipherment yet. Originally (4th bc) from northern pakistan and afghanistan. Important because - - ancestor of all modern indic writing system. Principles of brahmei writing (will be on quiz!) Every other base symbol is an onset-consonant + an inherent vowel, usually /a/ Where a different vowel is in the nucleus, some distinct element is added to the base symbol. Consonant clusters are formed by ligating base symbols. Only the last base symbol carries an inherent vowel (make a ligature and squish the letters together) A diacritic (virama) can mute the inherent vowel. Where there is no onset in the syllable, a vowel-only letter is written. Each consonant base-letter has a built-in vowel /a/ Where a vowel other than /a/ follows a consonant, that vowel is indicated by a bound-grapheme / diacritic.
