Inventory and structure of sounds of speech in linguistics (phonetics) Humans produce sound called phones or speech sounds. Analyzing the physiological mechanism of speech production is called articulatory phonetics. Measuring and analyzing physical properties of sound waves we produce is acoustic phonetics. Ipa (universal system for transcribing sounds of speech) A certain level of air pressure is required to keep speech mechanism functioning constant. Sound source containing a set of muscles called vocal cords. Air flows out of the lungs up to trachea and then larynx which is cartilage and muscle. The thyroid cartilage forms paired vocal folds. as air passes the space between vocal folds known as glottis, different glottal stages are produced depending on the position. Filters above larynx collectively known as voice tract. Consonants: voiced/voiceless/complete closure or narrowing of vocal tract/less sonorous. Vowels: little obstruction in vocal tract and are usually voiced/more sonorous. Glides: type of sound that shows both properties of both consonants and vowels-rapidly articulated vowels.
