Document Summary

Transcription: orthography comes with historical residue, and not all writing systems use a one-to-one correspondence between segments and symbols, not all languages have an orthography, some languages have lexigraphical meanings associated with symbols. Ideal transcription system: there is one-to-one correspondence between segments and symbols (i. e. the same sound is always transcribed the same, and the same symbol always means the same sound) Sounds and segments: speech sounds (or phones) are phonetic categories. Segments are a way to represent speech sounds. Segments tell us a way of how our minds work. Consonants: take the most space, and the most segments, pulmonic consonants are grouped by places of articulation, manner of articulation, and voiced/voicelessness. Voiced glottal stops are impossible, because the vocal folds are completely closed during a stop, stop they cannot vibrate and make a sound. Trills have more than one vibration, while taps or flaps have only one.
