LIN101H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Epenthesis
Document Summary
Formal way to connect the distributions of two allophones. Takes an underlying form as input, operates on it and gives a derived form as output ( middlebury) Need to make phonetic or phonological sense. A -> b/ c_d a becomes b when preceded by c and followed by d . Allophone a appears elsewhere, allophone b appears in environment c_d. If the environments that two rules apply to are different, they are unordered with respect to one another, meaning the order in which they are applied makes no difference to the outcome. However in some cases, order matters if the application of one rule creates an environment that makes it possible to apply the other rule. Epenthesis: -> schwa* / coronal fricative__coronal fricative. _" : positions input in relation to the other elements in the environment. { }" : combines two or more rules with identical parts.
