Document Summary

Looking at things in common amongst languages and differences. Typology avoided in this course because multiple meanings. Collecting broad patterns and making sense of them. But in this course, typology examined through prism/framework of generative grammar. Not all linguistics departments, particularly those in europe, do generative grammar: many us and can universities do. Generative grammar linguists versus general linguist*: using different frameworks, understanding enough of other framework to understand. Phonology feature theory, for example, particular to gg. Syntax optimality theory, particular gg; minimalist syntax. Being taught linguistics from a particular perspective, particular framework (generative grammar) Based on observation that children learn language quickly innately. Observe natural patterns not based on children learning language. Coherency, signs of understanding the material presented/discussed, presented in appropriate academic way, structured academic-type writing. Gg theory will say that it is impossible for a language to exist that doesn t have this universal. A general linguist will think differently for language universals (common to all languages)
