It"s possible that a monomer is transmited but it could also be the prossibility that the host is predisposed to the lewy body formaion . It serves as a template (it is able to seed proteins to misfold and ulimately cause disease) propagate aggregaion (vicious cycle: can overcome barriers to propagate from the periphery to the brain. Tau protein: most famous for ad but also present in lesser known ndd like ftd normally soluble but when hyperphosporylated, it aggregates and forms into toxic ibrils. Took tau aggregates and tau monomers let has tau aggregates (seeds) and show that cells take up aggregated tau but not monomeric. With co-cultures, you can see that there is transmission of tau into normal cells so it is able to transmit in culture seing only, and notby mixing. Tau-tg mouse extracted brain extracts and injected into other mice an found that it is able to produce tauopathy in an otherwise healthy mouse (human tau)
