Document Summary

Quiz 3 will be up to this lecture. Katakana was developed by partially writing chinese characters. Possible to have all 3 writing systems to write a word. Featural graphemes: two diacritics added as bound graphemes for voicing and voiceless bilabials (dakuten, handakuten) Add grapheme to other graphemes to make voiced sounds. Rendaku: voicing process in compounds (marked with the dakuten diacritic) Multiple ways of writing the same morpheme (diacritics) Same group of sounds = written multiple ways. Furigana: annotations for hiragana to indicate kanji pronunciation (administrative texts) The two moraic kana scripts are already phonographic which is why they don"t need furigana. Chinese graphemes = no moraic weight but the kana do. Chinese = truly syllabic (each character represents only 1 syllable; nothing smaller) Rare because they work best with simple syllable structures. Moraic scripts are used when there are more complex onsets/codas -> more graphemes are needed. Long vowels -> 2 moras (2 graphemes)
