LIN228 LECTURE 1, SEPTEMBER 14T H
Nasal cavity  can be blocked off or not
Oral cavity  starts at the lips and continues down to the throat
Note: only need to know what’s in the textbook! If it’s on the slides and not the text, don’t worry about it
Tongue:
oKnow where the tip, blade, front, back, and root are
oThese help us describe what part of the tongue is being used when we produce different sounds
Two types of articulators:
oUpper AKA Passive  can’t move dynamically
oLower AKA Active  can move
Sounds in red are the only sounds capable to pronounce
Lips vs. teeth
oBilabial stop  lips coming completely together to stop all air flow
oFricative  friction; air is still able to pass through articulators
ONLY LIP sound = bilabial
LOWER LIP + TEETH = labiodental
TEETH = dental
ALVEOLAR RIDGE = alveolar
Approximant sound  almost touching, similar to but not quite a fricative
TIP to BACK OF AR = retroflex
BLADE to BACK OF AR = postalveolar
FRONT to PALATE = palatal
BACK to VELUM = velar
Affricate = stop + fricative (stop air and immediately release air as a fricative)
ORAL VS. NASAL SOUNDS
Velum lowered = no contact with the back of the oral cavity,  air can pass through the nasal cavity to produce a nasal
sound
Nasal sounds are considered STOPS because the lips are closed and  the oral cavity is closed, but we do still get a
continuous flow of sound due to the nasal cavity being open
