The basic or underlying variant
Aspiration in Hindi, English, and Ossetic
Neutralizing rules
Neutralize contrast between two contrastive sounds
Schematically represent
oA always surfaces as A
oB most of the time surfaces as B, but in some contexts, surfaces as A
oContrast neutralizing rules makes the underlying A look at A in some
context (so contrast is neutralized)
N.B. note the brackets
Russian
Voiceless becomes voiced in genitive singular
oIn final consonant
oIn the first set of data, voicelessness is not changed
oSo why….?
To solve, must know the underlying representation what are these words
underlying form?
The first hypothesis cannot account for entire data
Thus the second hypothesis
Genitive form is the underlying
/muz/ is underlying form
Underlyingly, voiced becomes voicless voiceless genitive stays voiceless
oAll data accounted for
Morphological analysis not part of phonology but needed to ascertain the underlying form
Morphological basic form
Output of syntax is input of morphology
Output of morphology is input of phonology…etc.
The underlying form of phonology is NOT the same thing as the underlying form of
morphology
UNDERLYING FORM = output of morphology and input to phonology
Abstract root from which the genitive and the nominative words are derived in Russian
Morphology has already applied the plural rule to derive /kat-z/ - already applied the plural
rule
Phonology then makes the z into s
NB In examining plural and singular data, singular data has a different
underlying form than the plural data
