Document Summary

Living traditions and techniques are passed on from generation to generation. This is the manner in which most non-western music has been passed down. Collective passing on of songs from generation to generation. Should those traditions die, techniques change or evolve without attention to tradition, those traditions maybe simply lost or unconsciously changed or mutated to something different: like broken telephone. Helps to solve some of the negative characteristics of aural transmission. Clarifies things that we may already know about. Notation is always challenged by and falls short of actual music/performance practice. May sometimes sound different than the original: corelli, sonata in c major, op. What corelli published was much simpler than how he played it. How accurate is a detailed score: debussy, gollywog"s cakewalk children"s corner (1908) Daniel arfib, souffle du doux (1979: take the performer out of the question. Word painting: matching music gestures and expressions to portray visually the textual content.
