Document Summary

4 in e minor, the 4th movement / finale. Called by the critic schoenberg as developing variation". Musical aesthetics divided into two camps: progressive and conservative camp. Liszt and wagner are not in this course as they didn"t write symphonies (liszt wrote symphonic poems, with a vocal part) The progressive camp had extra-musical associations, not music for the sake of music e. g. berlioz"s symphony fantastique had a story attached to i. Idolized beethoven but felt that they could still improve and build upon his music. Also idolized beethoven, but saw him as an insurmountable pinnacle of art. We can only continue to contribute to music, but we can"t top beethoven. Would lead to scathing reviews between camps, and composers would be excluded from concerts held by the other camp. There was a very public element in these debates - people would argue by publishing articles on newspapers to insult each other.
