Old kingdom (2686-2160 bce): pyramid age and funerary beliefs. Probably combination of tomb and funerary enclosure of 1st dynasty. First large monument completely out o0f stone. Design of complex different to later pyramid complexes. Rectangular bastions protruding every 4 m: 13 with dummy doors, only 1 actual entrance. Entrance leads to small hypostyle hall = entrance hall. Complex as a whole (pyramid, south court, hebsed court, houses of south and north, serdab court, mortuary temple, north court, enclosure) Step pyramids of djoser"s sucessors: saqqara and zawyet el-aryan (barely stands today) (cid:1) (cid:1) 3 pyramids: (1) medium (for father huni?) Today partly collapsed , begun as step-pyramid, later transformed into true pyramid : (2+3) dahshur. 2) bent pyramid almost collapsed, angle changed, result: bent pyramid. 3) red pyramid first actual true pyramid: red or north pyramid (local red sandstone) Cultic buildlings unfinished (king died before buildings finished? (cid:1) 7 step-pyramids, 4-7 m high (all similar) same construction program (huni or sneferu?)
