We recognize signs and symbols that represent ideas, however writing can be a representation of speech not ideas. Characteristic of a city, however not essential for a city to exist. Writing developed independently in the 4 regions: mesopotamia, egypt, china, mesoamerica. There were clay tokens, numerical tablets (impressed with seals) and seals (on tablets, encompassed tokens) and tokens (could be used for accounting for sheep) found which are precursors for writing. Early numerical tablets in southern mesopotamia, western iran and sera: first writing was found in uruk iv, the city was centered around religious complex. Uruk had grown and was comparable to rome. Early signs are pictograms for and were literal, not contextual. Each region had different and forever evolving symbols, but they sometimes could understand the different ones the pictures in lecture slides show the evolution (most recent in the top of the small boxes)
