NEW335H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Inferior Frontal Gyrus, Calcarine Sulcus, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
Lecture 5: describe how aging affects cognition and memory. Cognitive: decrease in processing speed, working memory and long-term memory. Memory: decrease in prospective memory- open fridge and stare, free recall, source memory. Specifically reference the brain areas affected by aging. Thinning of cortex in: inferior prefrontal cortex, precentral gyrus, calcarine sulcus. No effect of thinning in middle prefrontal area. Detrimental effects of cognitive functioning may be related to thinning of these brain area, if thinning is prevented, cognitive decline may also be prevented- caution: correlational claim: describe the effects of meditation on the cortex with age. Discuss the brain areas affected by meditation during aging. Does not have a huge effect on global gray matter. Hippocampus, amygdala, posterior cingulate, orbital gyrus, anterior cingulate gyrus, mid cingulate gyrus. Is the evidence for meditation as a treatment for addiction particularly strong: mindfulness and tm generally used.
