- Long concrete steps and cross glass bridge to go to the door and take a sharp right
Sense of meaning: Connection to history and purpose --> Turns us into persons in a
community of persons
- If this sense of history with a kiaros is missing you will likely sense that your life is
lacking in meaning
- Other places where Axial revolution occured
Connection: Kairos --> most import turning point is moving from a non person to a
person. This process is not normally completed. The claim of Christanity is that we need
to be reborn again with Agape.
Greece --> Axial Revolution
- Groups + pivotal figure in Ancient Greece(Socrates)
Group #1 --> The Natural Philosophers
- Use second order thinking and start applying it to understand the natural world
- Basis for our scientific method
Thales
1) All is the moist

2) The loadstone has psyche
3) Everything is filled with Gods
Connection: Before Axial --> Understanding things largely in a mythological way(not
falsity) --> Agents and their motives --> Why is it raining? Hara caught Zues
1)
- Thales is using the distinction between the real world and the everyday world -->
Everything isn't really how they are
- Instead of finding out how is responsible based on agents he is analyzing what things
are made of --> Basic substance(means standing under)
- Looking for a natural rational explanation for things
- Why is it false but rational? What does everything need. What is Greece surrounded
by. If you dig into the ground what do you find?
2)
- Magnets have the capacity to move themselves
- Psyche originally means "the capacity to move yourself"
- Maybe behind magnets, people, and animals there may be something moving
3)
- The deeper substance is the ultimate reality
- Unifying order that makes sense to human beings and the critical thought can take us to
Point: Axial age takes us to scientific thinking. Beginning of method(Rational thought)
and vision(What we discover is worthy of thinking about)
Connection: Universal law that science uses --> From Ancient Israel
Greeks --> Analytic thinking and logical in nature

Contrast: Greek literacy --> Vowels and read left to right(Left hemisphere) | Israelite
--> No vowels and read right to left(Right hemisphere)
Hemisphere difference
- Not special to humans --> Same in frogs
Frog Problems: Familiar context there are probably other frogs trying to get the same
food
- Small differences make big differences (If you spot food 2 seconds faster)
Left Hemisphere (Greeks from reading left to right)
- Focused on looking for details and features
- Clarity and certainty about those features
- Requires fine grained actions --> Broken into many tiny steps so you can intervene
- Sequential steps so many different changes
- Likes to analyze and doesn't like ambiguity(makes things hard to break up into details)
- Likes things that don't depend on context
Other problem: Something wants to kill the frog? If there are predators what kind of
attention should you have? Do tiny details help when a tiger is chasing you. You need
fast processing
Right Hemisphere (Israelites from reading right to left)
- Paying attention to the whole context in ambiguity
- Not trying to discover laws about tigers
- Overarching meaning
Test: Navon letters
