NEW335H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Stroop Effect, Art Therapy, Loving-Kindness
Guest Lectures Part 1 – Johnny Dubois:
1. Differentiate state and trait mindfulness. How is each assessed?
Trait: stable predisposition
Assessment: Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) Scores
State: transient mental state
Assessment: Toronto Mindfulness Scale (TMS) Score
2. What were the three goals of this project?
a) Does mindfulness improve attention regulation?
b) Does mindfulness have an impact on recognition memory?
This is a non-directional hypothesis. They believe that mindfulness increase attention, so
does that make a person more likely to detect/encode memory? Is it able to reduce the emotional
info and ultimately eliminate the benefit of emotional valence attached to memories?
c) Does trait mindfulness impact state mindfulness?
3. What was the main demographic in this project?
n = 78
Age = 17 - 46, mean 20.62
Ethnicity = Caucasian: 76%
Gender = Female: 78%
= Male: 22%
4. What memory tasks were used?
Recognition test/accuracy to recall words from Emotional Stroop task
5. What were the main findings of this project?
Mindfulness reduces emotional interference but is moderated by trait mindfulness
[only for low trait]
-low trait mindfulness – more receptive to intervention
-high trait mindfulness – maxed out/wont moderate
Mindfulness does not impact memory
State mindfulness does not control for trait mindfulness

Document Summary
Guest lectures part 1 johnny dubois: differentiate state and trait mindfulness. Is it able to reduce the emotional info and ultimately eliminate the bene t of emotional valence attached to memories: does trait mindfulness impact state mindfulness, what was the main demographic in this project? n = 78. Mindfulness reduces emotional interference but is moderated by trait mindfulness. [only for low trait] low trait mindfulness more receptive to intervention high trait mindfulness maxed out/wont moderate. State mindfulness does not control for trait mindfulness. It is a foundation that works for the prevention and recovery for all those who suffer from addictions. They enhance community development by increasing general knowledge about addiction and related mental issues. Reduced activity in the acc and pfc. Improved emotion regulation, decision making, and stress reduction. Rct examined effects of brief mindfulness training on acc and pfc activity: these areas are the centre for decision making and emotion control.
