Pharynx: swallows chewed food mixed with saliva. Liver: makes bile, which aids in digestion and absorption of fat. Pancreas: releases bicarbonate to neutralize the hydrochloric acid in chime: secretes digestive enzymes: Proteases (protein digesting enzymes such as trypsin and chymotrypsin) Gallbladder: stores bile and releases it into the small intestine when needed: bile is secreted to emulsify fat/break it up into small droplets so it can be absorbed. Digestive system is made up of: gastrointestinal tract: a long tube of components, accessory organ: which aid the digestive process. Structure of the gut wall: small intestine: layer of tissue, lumen: space inside of the tube of the gi tract, mucosa/mucosal cells: layer of tissue lining the lumen, secrete mucus, function to absorb nutrients.
