Lecture 22 - clinical trials in global health and special populations. Part 1: drug development for neglected diseases: classical drug development pipeline takes about 12-15 years and is a very long and expensive process (cost about 1-2 billion $) Ntd"s (where are they?: asia is the continent with the most ntd"s. Malaria: malaria endemic regions mainly effect low income countries such as africa, south america lower part of asia, 300 million people infected in tropical regions, correlation between malaria and ntds is that they effect similar locations. There are 17 ntd (don"t need to memorize the names), caused by protozoa, bacteria , helminth (worm) and viruses. Lymphatic filariasis : elephantiasis (legs swell up like elephants: spread by mosquitos worms forms nest and block the lymphatic vessels people have swelling in genital regions as well as limbs lymphatic and kidney damage.
