Drugs are chemicals: historical aspects of drug chemistry. Biological material contains a mixture of chemicals; chemical techniques to isolate and purify the acive principles . Way to separate compounds in a mixture, based on their lipophilicity/hydrophilicity. Some acive principles are more lipophilic than other. Some drugs will be in the water layer, some in the oil layer. Method of solvent extracion was already developed in germany. Crystals formed ater beetroot extracted with brandy sweet, idenical to sugar-cane crystals (approved by napoleon on sugar without britain) had his people develop a method to extract sugar from a plant they have in. Germany, therefore won"t need to reply on britain for imports of sugar. Modifying extracion techniques to obtain diferent acive principles from plants. Within the opium sap is the acive component of morphine; diferent suppliers of opium result in dif strengths and amounts of acive compounds.
