Lecture 19 clinical trials in global and special populations. Big three infectious diseases receive more money and attention than neglected diseases. 1% of clinical trials are for neglected diseases. Goal is to deliver up to 18 new treatments for neglected tropical diseases by 2023. Partners us clinicians with rwandan colleagues to transfer clinical, teaching, and research skills; each us faculty stays for 1 year. Most trials are for re-positioning already approved drugs for use in children; rcts of new drugs are rare. Ivacaftor lung function and quality of life is significantly improved after drug use.
