1. What is Pharmacology?
The science of drugs, the study of action and fate in the body
A drug is a chemical substance (other than those essential for normal function)
that exerts a biochemical or physiological effect in a living organism, whether
therapeutic or not
o Can be natural or synthetic
o Essential nutrients and endogenous substances can be classified as drugs
when given at high doses or as replacement therapy
Pharmacy
o Health profession concerned with preparing, dispensing, and safely and
effectively using medication
Therapeutics
o The treatment of disease (using drugs or other means)
Toxicology
o A science focusing on chemicals with undesirable biological activity
Pharmacology is a basic and clinical biomedical science
o Understanding the interaction between drugs and drug targets
o Gain insight into normal and abnormal function, and thereby improving
therapeutics
