Being power seems like a good thing, because you can get what you what. But there is a cost of power, especially in maintaining it. Limitations to how the power can be used: with great power comes great responsibility. Other people want your power, people with power are always challenged. People want to overturn the influence of these people. Maintenance of power: other actors other than states have power maintenance concerns. First concept is hegemony: if you are the most powerful state in a system, sometimes you can be labelled a hegemon. Dominant force, has disportionate influence in the system, influence how others think. Influence through political changes, military, cultural means, promote a way of life (capitalism of the us) Look at great powers: comes from realist thinking: states that has preponderant influence in : politics, cultural, military, economic power. To become a hegemon: you need strong military, economic, and political power, basic criteria.
