Phl273 lec 4 oct 15  The roots of deep ecology o Inspiration from: o Taoism,  Promotes living with nature in peace and compassion o heracleitus,  everything is moving and in motion o Spinoza,  everything that exists in nature is living and he saw the divine reflected through the natural world o Whitehead;  process philosopher who rejected the mind body dualism o Ghandi, Buddhism, native amercian cultures, Thoreau, woody gutherie o Thomas Jefferson,  He said that farmer was the primary object of nature o They are trying to respond and react to what they perceive to be a wrong headed for ethics that is to blame for the env crisis at present o Deep ecologists started writing in the 60’70’80’s  This was time where ppl were chaining themselves to the forests and trees to stop lumber and deforestation  This was the time where env problems were becoming popular  Paradigm is something that is so close to us reflected through culture, habits, language and the paradigm shift suggests that something is so close/normal that we don’t even stop thinking about it and it defines who we are  Deep ecology vs shallow ecology o Difference is the willingness to question o They say that deep ecology goes deeper in the questioning it does  Arne Naess: Ecosophy o “by an ecosophy I mean a philosophy of ecological harmony or equilibrium” o The details of an ecosohpy will show many variations due to significance difference concerning not only the facts of pollution, resources, population etc but also value priorities  Ecosophy has to do with wisdom of the eco (env) o They talk about this relation/total field  Really thinking holistically and to stop dissecting the world; that we have humans on one side and then everyone else on the other side o “In relation, total-field perspective, rejecting the man in env image in favour of a holistic, comprehensive and non anthropocentric and understanding o Metaphysical ecology recognizes the limits of individualism and reductionism  Problem with reductionism: were not sure about long terms effects and were not sure is to how chemicals and interact with human health  Scntist/philosIs say reductionism doesn’t need to be tossed out but the problem is that people think this is the only way we can go, which is not true  Metaphysical holism o Denies separateness of humans from nature o See Self and self: ecosophy has only one ultimate from self identity  Identity: for decarte it was that we were thinking things “i think therefore i am”  But the question is wh
