Morality is a non aggression pact backed by a power (government, poltical power: that regulated system. Fear/ awe is motivation for keeping with morality. Problem: power may be corrupt (b/c they are also within social contract) Glaucon"s ring of gyges: what motive does one have for not cheating if the power will never know: enforcement. Same idea that morality is a deal. Ethical feelings that we have, are related to evolution. Naturalist- humans are phenomena of the world, behavior is natural. Hobbs: motivated by narrow self interest: good = get what i want. Justice = artificial virtue, created that you already have an interest in. Moral sentiments vs sympathy: world is no longer everyone vs everyone . Basic moral sentiments spread and include other people: esp within natural group ie family. Minds will identify with sympathy: can put themselves in the position of another person, sympathy has nothing to do with social contract.
