PHL100Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 40: Perspectivism, Ressentiment
Document Summary
The key to tying everything together is the ascetic ideal. Using some form of self discipline and holding it up as a moral ideal. Because the slaves can"t act out their violent tendencies, they develop an inner life, thought, processes of deliberation, calculation, self monitoring so that they don"t get in trouble by what they do. They can think about wanting to kill someone but they cant do it because its dangerous. So this is a rudimentary form of self awareness. They are interested in the truth, but not invested in one side or the other. Another one of the results of the ascetic ideal. They help us create something that is undeniably human, self control, control over our actions. So our life now has meaning because we can choose. Asceticism undercuts the religious form from which it came from. It says that there is nothing inherently good.
