Laches
The%Laches%is%a%representation%of%Plato's%early%dialogues%(more%about%Socrates),%
which%is%usually%a%report%of%a%typical%Socratic%conversation%(a%form%of%interaction%
known%as%the%elenchus)
It%isn't%so%much%of%a%conversation%as%it%is%a%kind%of%interrogation.%Socrates%
usually%starts%with%a%"what%is%X"%question%(where%X%is%traditionally%a%virtue)%
allows%his%conversational%partner%to%create%an%argument%which%he%later%
demolishes%until%his%conversational%partner%admits%he%doesn't%know%what%
X%is.%
The%Laches%follows%the%traditional%Socratic%conversation,%in%which%the%character%
Socrates%discuss%what%courage%is
The%character%Lysimachus%and%Melesias%asks%Socrates%if%they%should%school%their%
children%in%the%art%of%fighting%in%armour,%"to%build%character"
Socrates%transforms%a%technical%question%of%fighting%in%armour%into%a%
Socratic%inquiry%of%the%nature%of%virtue%which%is%"what%virtues%would%we%
gain%from%fighting%in%armour?"
Socrates%maintains%they%are%seeking%experts%in%the%"care%of%the%soul"
The%Round%with%Laches
Socrates%explains%that%the%definition%is%true%but%he%wants%a%definition%that%
applies%to%all%situations"
An%army%could%courageously%retreat
Courage%is%the%"endurance%of%the%soul"%-Laches
Socrates%explains%this%definition%is%too%broad%since%there%are%instances%of%
endurance%which%is%rash%and%foolish.
A%solider%trying%to%prevent%4000%enemies

Socrates%questions%how%are%people%who%behave%wisely%exhibiting%courage
