Document Summary

Locke: identity & difference: locke on identity. Locke says that objects come in different kinds. To be an object of a certain kind is to have certain kinds of identity conditions. These identity conditions allow us to say things like bundle abc and bundle def" are produced by the same object. Numerical identity = like leibniz"s law. if two things are numerically identical. they"re the same kind of thing in the same instance. You only find out if two things are numerical identity if you find out they"re the same thing (i. e. clark kent and superman are numerically identical)! Personal identity = has to do with a person not with human beings. The persistent and continuous unity of an individual person. Existence conditions = requires that some mass of matter exist continuously. Identity conditions = mass of matter may change, but the continuous identity endures. By the end of its life, it is made of completely new materials!
