理学 Learning of Principle
Terms in Traditional Chinese: daoshu道術(dao and art of its realization), daoxue道學 (learning of
dao), lixue理學(learning of principles)...etc.
When first introduced to China by M. Ricci and G. Aleni at the end of 16th Cetuy, philosophy
was translated first phonetically as 斐祿所費亞(Aleni, Xixuefan), or as aizhi zhixue愛智之學, or as
lixue 理學.
The Term Philosophy in Chinese:
Zhe Xue 哲學
西周Nishi Amane (1829-1892) taslated philosophy as tetsugaku, read in Chinese as zhexue
哲學. This term was use first by Chinese scholar Liang Qichao 梁啟超in his newspaper published in
Yokohama, Japan.
In Chinese, zhe eas ise, xue eas leaig, togethe they ea leaing to be
ise, siee of isdo, as diffeet fo its Weste eaig, loe of isdo.
Translated by a Japanese scholar Nishi Amane 西周 Tetsu()gaku()
Term”哲学“ was firstly used by 梁启超
