Document Summary

Disclosure of diagnosis, prognosis, and medical options lets patients decide for themselves. To restrict a person"s liberty/autonomy for what is perceived to be good for the patient. Manipulation of decision (presentation of information, putting pressure) Hippocratic oath: traditional medicine emphasizes looking after the health of the patient (beneficence) above all other concerns. Weak paternalism: making sure one knows & has the adequate information to make his own decisions. Strong paternalism: imposing one"s own value orderings onto someone else. Paternalistic acts won"t truly promote patient"s good. Each person knows their own interests better than any other person: outside interference- more likely that it will interfere wrongly, john stuart mill"s on liberty . The why do we need doctors: doctors are experts about the medical facts and prognoses, patients remain authorities about their values, which determines what is good for the individual. Most people value autonomy over objectively-good decisions.
