Document Summary

Newtons theory of gravitation: planets in the solar system travel along ellipses (orbital shape) around the sun. Newton explained planetory motion by saying that all objects exert gravitational forces on one another. Fg = gmm/r2 , where g = gravitational constant, mm= masses of objects, r. They don t fall directly because they have sideway motion. For two objects, newtons theories of motion and theory of gravity predict elliptical orbits. For three or more objects, the theories have to be approximated. If the object moves a distance d due to the applied force, the work done on the object is w= force x distance. Kinetic energy: associated with the motion of objects. It is related to the square of the objects speed. Potential energy is associated with the arrangement of a system of objects that can exert force on one another.
