POL101 NOTES FROM OCTOBER 15, 2012
LECTURE: COMMUNISM AND FACISM
These countries have a different mind set than the West:
1. Institutionalized Staterionalism very rare and is when the people know specifically in
which type of state they are in and know that it exisits
2. They have a different ideology: salvation ideology in belief of a perfect human
3. There is always a big toll on human lives: on constituted bases on which basic human rights
Liberal democracy and crisis: 19th centaury was the high one
The principal of liberal democracy was so appealing that it developed in places where the base
for it was not present
Hungary faked it (it was corrupt), which led to Hay Day/ there was a crisis because of the
corruption as there were false election votes
Example of how liberal democracy functioned in the 3rd world
People started to question whether liberal democracy really worked in those type of
places
WWI discredited that liberal democracy was peaceful
The left became about inequality as the rich tried to control the poor
The right believed that there was a world hierarchy but the wrong people ran it:
was run by inferiors and they rejected the worst form of hierarchy and hierarchy
of natural order was restored (Germany)
Liberal Democracy and the working class: extension of the franchise
Social democracy rose and led to electoral socialism
Two thoughts: evolve through evolutionary means (social) and revolution through evolution
(West)
Revolution? Migrated to East Europe
Lenin believed that revolution moved under conditions that favored authoritism/ under
condition party of a different type
It had to be a religious conversion (gain occult status) under conspiracy full time
secret society
If the people are left alone there will be no revolution as the people are greedy and want money
(they have “trade union consciousness”). The people need to be brought out of the working
class
The party brings truth
Marxism: had a backward view of economy
There was a low lit. rates and not an urban society
The working class did not exist and there was no creation of industry
1917: WWII and a revolution. This led to chaos in Russia and there was no Tzar. They were
forced to leave the war and Lenin seized power in the October Revolution.
World War Revolution and Power: Lenin believed that revolution would spread everywhere
No revolution and went from isurrectionalism to statism (Soviet Union support communism as it
was in the states interest)
Economy: Lenin believed in “Communism equals to Soviet power plus electrification”
Stalinism: terror and progress
Soviet Union now had to industrialized really fast and created a militarize state
A lot of military expenditure and old technology
Germany: late state unification in 1871: they were behind in economy and politics
Believed in a economic model with out the political model
When the economy was behind they have to change in order to catch up
German militarism: rational as it helped with change
Weimer republic: the democracy was flawed as the Nazis were tiny but made the system made
possible that they could join/ they used liberal democracies rules to destroy it as they passed
the emergency law and shut it down.
Anti Semitism:
1. They wouldn’t accept Jesus believing in his death (religion)/ They were only anti
Judaism not anti Semitism
2. Modernity: there was a national dislike and the Jews were isolated since the French
revolution. There was a national ethnic being and they wouldn’t accept you.
3. Economic and social: the jews had all the good jobs as they were primarly given
what were though to be the bad jobs but with the rise of capitalism their jobs
became valuable
Nazism: they want to return to a militarized state
The race became key
War of diplomatic recognition for the West while for the east it was a racial domination and
extermination
