Document Summary

Toleration only makes sense in the context of nding something problematic, yet accepting it. To tolerate something means to nd it bad but not interfering with it. There is also a limit to what you nd intolerable. Permission is when a majority grants toleration to a minority: there is a problem with this view, because it"s people in power granting a sort of favour to a minority, the french granted permission to the huguenots. Coexistence is another form, and it is when two groups have equal power. They previously struggled to coexist, and yet they decide to make peace: peace of ogsburg is an example of this. It is when you tolerate another group because you genuinely respect them. Under paganism, people"s religions were tied to their residence. The question of toleration thus didn"t come up as much. There was a peaceful coexistence of different faiths, since they often didn"t mix. The protestant reformation changed the makeup of europe.
