Civil Society and the Ideologies that Divide Us
Formal vs. Substantive Features of Liberal Democracy
-Liberal Democracy not just about institutional design but also about substantive ends of
people in society
freedom
-system in which ideally translate life plans
values and wants
-liberal democracy do all of these
-what do we want? What is the good life?
The good life term is abused
-now: wealth
-should be: how should you live, make the most out of life the way you live
dictates the kind of politics you want
-these lead to the deep disagreements we have
Disagreements
-importance? Freedom vs equality vs republic virtue
i) Freedom: freedom FROM, the state, others, do whatever you want as long as you dont
interfere with others
-[MARX] freedom from and freedom to do is restricted by access to resources (education,
shelter, food)
ii)
-way we gear our society is to form towards one of these (?)
ii) [PLATO] –purpose of politics, state craft is soul craft: purpose of politics is to make you
a better person
-while freedom maybe the freedom from, republic virtue argues we are all citizens, and as
citizens we should live in an order that makes us the best person we can be (time to live
contemplate of life/deeper life)
-a society that promotes, encourages, etc. that you life best life
maximize choice
The isms debate
- issue is power its continued existence within liberal democracy
Critique
Socialism- distributional UNFAIR, inhibits freedom (eg. free to sleep under a bridge)
-distributional justice unjust, power cannot be legitimate
