Document Summary

Machiavelli saying it"s a shame that rulers don"t try to learn from the ancients. Says much excellence was preserved in rome since it got founded for many centuries. Men of the area set out to build the city because they don"t feel safe in their scattered settlements an example is athens and venice. These societies organized themselves and followed laws without a supreme leader. They were also successful because their location provided them with a long time of peace. The second case of how a city is founded ( foreigners starting it) has two ways depending on if foreigner free or owe allegiance to other. A new conquered place but king doesn"t want to live there. A city is made by free foreigners when a people are forced to abandon their land. City will be more or less marvellous depending on if founder was skilled or not. Men act out of necessity or free choice.
