Democratization: the third wave jan 22 nd. Wave of democratization: a group of transitions from nondemocratic to democratic regimes that occur within a specified period of time and that significantly outnumber transitions in the opposite direction during that period. Authoritarian regimes become more open and less repressive; liberalizations also occur in democracies themselves. Huntington defines democracy as a system of government in which the people choose their leaders at regular intervals through free and fair elections. Democracy was achieved through long social and economic processes that often culminated in revolution. In the first wave, the cause of democracy was basically modernization. Demands for voice and education occurred as a result of urbanization and the rise of a middle class. It came about by revolution as people demanded elections and the right to choose their own representatives. 11 countries of the 33 original ones die out. Second wave: after world war 2. spike from 1942-1973.
