Politics of Development
1950's--> important change in poli sci, they started research outside
north america and europe. They wanted to divide the world into
communist states and democratic states. U.S wanted other countries to
adopt democracy so they funded such research.
Decolonization--> there were many countries that became independent,
started in 1948 with india and was over in 1963. There are no forms
of politics in these places. Now subjects are citizens, so now
political scientists have something to study.
Economic growth--> Rise of gdp after ww2. This also occured in poor
countries. Urbanization, literacy and mobility. Analysts saw this as
a passing of traditional society into modernity. The author tracks
the transition between development and democracy.
Learner takes the reader to balgat in turkey. The point is that
balgat is still a traditional village but may be going through
modernitiy.
Features of tradition
1:Isolation
www.notesolution.com
2:They are not participants in market economy
3:They lack information-->only one radio beloning to the chief
The cheif himself(model of tradition)--> He controls the interview, he
is present in the room while others are being intervied. There is a
lack of physical and social mobility.
Peasents hold "lack of empathy" they are not able to imagine
themselves in someone elses shoes.
Lack of toleration--> Tradition stands in the way of modernity. The
grocer is mobile, he travels to ankara, media reads news paper,
listens to the radio as well as world events. Grocer has desire to be
wealthy. These are modern traits-->he is able to imagine change. He
is unpopular because he is different.
Learners project is identifying a puzzle--> Turkish peasents were
hoplessley traditional. These same peasents end up voting against the
party in power. It is the grocer who is the hero when he returns to
balgat in 1954. It has endured stunningly fast modernation. It now
takes less than half an hour to get to ankara, people travel to the
city everyday. Most men are employed at the factory and earn wages.
From 50 houses to 500 houses. Balgat has now been incorporated into
the city. Many people now have radios.
